2009 Lost Valley Logistics

Lost Valley Driving
We need drivers for both bikes and Scouts! Each family should plan on driving at least one way!
If you do not drive, please consider contributing some “Gas money” to those who are serving by transporting your son(s).

Having the Scouts bring their Mountain bikes makes the week even more fun! (consider bringing an extra tube or two!). We hope to be able to transport all bikes of Scouts that want to bring them: however. We will bring all that we can, and IF we have to limit bikes coming due to transport room to/from camp, priority will be given to those whose family’s are staying at camp, driving, etc. (once again, Tour Leader’s decision in consult with the Troop Committee). So, e-mail your assigned patrol’s ASM (see below): the date(s) (July 12 and/or July 18) you can drive, the number of PASSENGERS you can take, and the total number of bikes you can carry. (Include combinations, i.e. if we take out the back seats, we can get ___ bikes and ____ Scouts/gear).

**Groups (mostly along patrol lines) as below will be responsible for transportation. Individuals are responsible for bringing the “Troop tent” from their Patrol Tents. Please do not wait until the day before we leave (or the day of!) to decide on your tent mate and obtain a tent.

**Parents. ..please call/e-mail the Scoutmaster Corps member assigned to your son’s driving group ASAP to volunteer for driving. Let them know how many Scouts you can bring with gear, and how many bikes you can bring. These leaders are also volunteering their week at camp, so please make this job easier for them! (Please do not e-mail Dr Bryon about this unless you are in his assigned driving group below).

**Getting a sturdy bike rack for your car helps Troop 301! Also, one can be creative and remove back seats to bring bikes, and let others bring gear and Scouts.

**In the past, some well meaning parents have made “Their own” arrangements for driving. If you choose to do this, PLEASE let the leaders in charge of each driving group know. If you do not, we end up scheduling extra spots. Nuff said.

**If you are committed to driving pickup on Saturday and find that you cannot pickup on Saturday, PLEASE find a replacement from your group list below. Calling us at Lost Valley and having us try to do this from camp is very difficult on the leaders who are already volunteering their time at camp. Also, only the drivers/vehicles that are on our tour permit should be used (we have the information from when you registered or from the recharter).

EVERY family should plan on helping out transporting the Scouts one way! This will allow us to be able to carpool, and hopefully get the Scout’s bikes up to camp. We do not want to have to say that each individual family is responsible for getting their own son to and from camp, but some Troops
have had to say this when folks do not volunteer. Again, nuff said.

Discussion/trades between Scoutmaster Corps members for ride/bike transportation needs/resources is encouraged as needed.

Some suggestions on what to bring/Merit Badge Thoughts

**Some merit badges, like shotgun and horsemanship, as previously advertised, are at the discretion of the teacher. If they feel the boy is not strong enough, mature enough, etc., this is the decision that counts, and I will respect that.

**Long pants are required for horse riding.

**Swimming merit badge: bring a long pair of pants and long shirt that can be used to inflate on Thursday. Also, they should bring a pair of shoes that can get wet (sometimes they allow aquasocks and Croc type shoes for this requirement).

**To take First Aid, the boy should have completed First Class (or be very close to completing this, as well as know all the first aid leading up to First Class). If a boy decides to take this class, he should obtain and read (a couple of times!) the FIRST AID MERIT BADGE BOOK. There are quizzes to
take on the home page of Troop301.com and on the Troop Blog, and/or they can request a “Teaching quiz” by e-mailing bbsolberg@aol.com

**If you are taking Camping merit badge: a piece of paper for the parent to sign/me to cosign listing with the dates of the 20 nights of camping and the rest of the requirement (backpack, canoe, etc.) for #9.

**Boating Merit Badges: bring a pair of aquasocks to change into at the lake (their feet can really get banged up/cut without protection).

**Some boys want to do the baskets before they come to camp. The Scout should write his name and Troop 301 on the bottom of the basket with a sharpie pen. Put the baskets in a box, and write his name on the outside of the box. There are kits at the Scout Shop at Camp Balboa, but there are less expensive kits (also easier to make!) at: http://www.paulssupplies.com

**Get the merit badge book if possible for the classes that you are taking, and read through it. My sons usually do most of the written work ahead of time on binder paper, leaving a space between lines to add/change things.

**Please note that Art, Basketry, Leatherwork, Pottery and Woodcarving are walk in Merit Badges and can be done anytime Grace Handycraft is open. In the Nature Center, Bird Study, Insect Study, Mammal Study, Nature, Reptile and Amphibian, and Soil and Water Conservation Merit Badges are walk in and scheduled with the Nature Staff.

**Consider bringing a pair of leather gloves to protect your hands if you are taking woodcarving.

**When we get to camp, the boy may put his things outside of a tent with his two tentmates, but DO NOT UNPACK! We factor many things into the placement of boys/adults, and adults may need to rearrange the kids.

**Put the bikes in the trees along the trails into our campsite. Do not bring them into the tent or concrete areas.

**We will ask the drivers to move their vehicles ASAP to a nearby lot. You can stay at camp for awhile, but your car will need to be moved away from the pool area.

PACKING FOR CAMP!
–>>> Write name/Troop 301 with a “Sharpie” on EVERYTHING that you can, the back under the neckerchief, shirt tags, pack, towels, etc. etc.!!!!

What to Pack in: Barring unforeseen road closures, we will unload the boys’ belongings
within a hundred feet of his tent.

Therefore, a backpack is nice, but not necessary. The boy may pack in a medium size duffle bag, or use a rolling duffle (the ones at COSTCO worked great at Camp Emerald Bay). His sleeping bag does
not have to go into the duffle, but should be in such a way that he can carry it. The boy should do the actual packing, with your supervision. Put things in plastic bags also. Put in two extra LARGE GARBAGE BAGS that he can use to put his things in during rainy times.

If there is too much stuff for the boy to carry easily in two trips from the car, then you have packed too much.

Once again. Write name/T301 on everything!

MANDATORY ITEMS:
Notebook/paper/pens
preaddressed and stamped envelopes for home!
Scout Handbook with name on it!!!!
Small pack to carry above
Sack lunch for the first day. (Drivers will be instructed NOT to stop on the way up)

Clothing:
Water resistant watch that can be worn during swimming. This REALLY helps the boys keep their time commitments!
WEAR Scout Uniform (Class B).
Bring Class A: including scout shirt and shorts (or pants),
TROOP HAT! (sports hats and other logo hats are not Troop uniform).
NECKERCHIEF! This is required for evening colors.
Nighttime wear
Sweater or jacket (it can get cool, and it rained last year!)
Light weight poncho ( a few dollar one/avoid the “Emergency ponchos” that cost a dollar).
Stocking cap/mittens
Scout hat
Long pants-one pair
T-shirts: 4 minimum. They can buy one at camp as well.
Shorts-2 pair
Sturdy shoes with socks that fit.
Aquasocks-Especially if boating merit badges are planned.
Swim suit–>>>pack near the top so he can get at it easily on Sunday afternoon.
Swim goggles (if desired)
Towel (larger than 2 by 4 feet just ends up in the dirt!)
Socks (3 pair minimum)
Underwear for 6 days
Long sleeve shirt–especially if taking swimming, lifesaving, rowing, or canoeing merit badges, as you will be practicing survival/clothes inflation in the water.
BIKE HELMET IN THEIR LUGGAGE- do not have it loose or attached to the bike!

Toilet kit (I pack these in a large ziplock bag!):
Toothpaste and toothbrush
Soap and shampoo

Medication:
Label with name of boy and med, and to be given to Dr. Solberg with written instructions-place in a ziplock bag!
Wash cloth/emergency toilet paper (a few feet)
Deodorant!
Shaving gear (if needed)
Personal first aid kit!
Comb/small brush
Sunscreen!
Small container bug repellent! (20 percent-or less- DEET, or the new pepper spray from CUTTER was usually adequate last year. Avon products are not effective for more than an hour in my experience).
Chapstick
Toe nail clipper

Camp Necessities:
Sleeping Bag!!
A sheet is nice also, in case it is hot, and they just want to lie on top of their sleeping bag and put the sheet over them. Since it is hot and dusty, and we will be setting up camp/going to the pool for swim tests hopefully very soon after arrival, the Troop uniform will be the Troop t-shirt and cap. Make sure and pack your Class A shirt, pants, and neckerchief, as these are needed for supper each evening!
Small flashlight/extra batteries
Sompass
Water bottle-2 (empty plastic gatorade bottle works well!) Bring two, as they usually lose one!).

Optional
Order of the Arrow Sash
Camera/film (disposable cameras are good, and not a tragedy if lost!)
Swim goggles
Bike/helmet (pack the helmet IN their luggage)
**spending money: $20 at a minimum. Bring at least $20 more for a handicraft merit badge. Horse trail rides cost $11 and up, and a camp t-shirt is similar in cost. Place the money (one and 5 dollar bills are the best!) in an envelope with the Scout’s name on it and the amount of money. PLEASE DO NOT SEAL THE ENVELOPE. These will be kept by the adults, and the money will be rationed out each day. This way, if the Scout loses his money, he has not lost everything!

SCOUTS DO NOT BRING: folding chairs, firearms, radios, alcohol, switchblades, cell phones, ammunition, tape recorders, illegal substances, large knives, pagers, matches, TV’s, jewelry, sheath knives, fireworks, comic books, pornography, gang paraphernalia.

They really do not need a knife unless taking wilderness survival or woodcarving. Woodcarving merit badge is usually not taken by the young Scouts, and a cut from a knife can end their week at camp.

Scouts LOVE getting mail (and cookies) from home, so you can send your Scout mail at Lost Valley:
Scout’s Name/Troop 301
Camp Grace/Anza Campsite
Schoepe Scout Reservation
31422 Chihuahua Valley Road
Warner Springs, CA 92086

Remind your son to:
**Ride his bike carefully and slowly, especially in the loose dirt at the bottom of the hills-falls from a bike can end their week at camp. The kids get excited about riding, but safety is the number one concern.

**Not to be barefoot, except at the pool. A cut or embedded object in the foot can also end their week at camp. Lost Valley Adventure/Driving Directions There is NO gas at Lost Valley.fill up before!

Meet at Scripps Ranch Community Park (on blue Cypress) on Sunday, July 12, 9:00 AM. Bring a sack lunch, your camping supplies as per above, and a troop/personal tent if you were assigned to bring one. Wear Class B uniform (Troop 301 t-shirt and hat) and swim suit.

*Go to Scripps Poway Parkway.

*Turn right, follow Scripps Poway Parkway east until the end.

*Turn left onto 67/78. Stay on 78 through Ramona.

*Turn left at Santa Ysabel onto 79.

*Stay on 79 past Warner Springs, Puerta La Cruz, and Sunshine Summit.

*Turn right on Chihuahua Valley Rd.

*Drive approx. 6 miles to the beginning of Lost Valley Road. (Lost Valley Staff may meet us here).

*The “Scenic” dirt road goes straight ahead, as the paved road makes a sharp right turn, and a driveway goes to the left. In other words, you want the middle road in this trifurcation.

*Stay on this dirt road . .it should be marked “Lost Valley.”

*Follow this scenic dirt road for approx. 11 miles into camp.

*This is a single lane road and uphill traffic has the right of way-it is 15 mph speed limit.

*Upon arrival, the gates to Grace Campground may be closed. IF the gates are closed, proceed to the main office area. They may have us eat lunch in that parking lot, or allow us to proceed to the parking lot by the dining hall (Beckman Hall-bathrooms are inside). If the gate is open, head towards Grace cabins/pool. We are in Anza campsite-right next to the Grace Pool.

Please: Do not drive/park on the east side/back of the pool house. Scouts should unload, so the cars may be moved out of the camping area ASAP. Move the cars back to the parking lot by the dining hall (Beckman Hall). Scouts/Scouters with troop/personal tents may set up. We will need to get the shade structures erected by the Scouts. The other Scouts may tentatively pick a platform tent with their TWO tentmates and may place their belongings at the entrance of the tent, but they should NOT unpack, as the adults may need to move them to another tent.
