Troop 301 Eagles Nest

2019 Troop 301 Eagle Scouts Annual Reunion

One of my favorite evenings of the year: the Scripps Ranch Troop 301 Eagle Scout and parents reunion!
**Such a gathering of those who have demonstrated personal achievement, leadership, and adventure travel in their Scouting careers, and who have now gone on to college, Grad School, Law School, and/or their careers. It is so wonderful to reminisce and catch up with all who attend!
**I have known some of these Eagle Scouts/parents since 2001!

Thank you to Vivek and his family for all they have given to Scouting. Thank you to the many Scouts and Scouters that have shared this journey and helped him along the way!

Josh Solberg
Josh was in Scouts for many years, and had many adventures.
He joined Scouting as a Tiger Cub in Corvallis, Oregon. He moved to Scripps Ranch as a Wolf Scout, and earned the Arrow Of Light in Pack 616 (“Is Really Keen!”) of Scripps Ranch.
He served as a Den Chief, Patrol Leader, Instructor, Yosemite Trek Crew Leader, Yosemite Trek JASM, Cub Day Camp and Cub Twilight Camp Staff. He was the first Troop 301 SPL and Junior Assistant Scoutmaster.
Josh went to summer camps at Lost Valley and Emerald Bay. Before he turned 18, he had attended Florida Sea Base, completed six Yosemite 50+ mile Treks and had been to Philmont three times. He was the first Scout to earn the “500+ Miles” hiking award in Troop 301.
Josh is a third generation Eagle Scout, and the second Eagle Scout of Troop 301/Scripps Ranch-San Diego: Josh’s paternal grandfather, Gerry Solberg, earned his Eagle Scout Award in North Dakota; Josh’s dad, Dr. Bryon Solberg, earned his Eagle Scout Award in Troop 301 of San Carlos/Belmont (Northern California).

Eagle Project:
Replaced, rebuilt, secured, and/or refurbished the 19 distance markers along the multi-use road surrounding Miramar Lake.

Tim DeRego
Tim started his scouting career in 1st grade as a Tiger Cub in Pack 616. He was in Den 1, and was the only founding member of this Den to make it all the way to the Eagle Rank. Tim found a love for the outdoors, and a love for service. Wearing a uniform, saluting the American flag, and being a part of something bigger than himself were customs that grew onto Tim at this young age. Upon bridging into Boy Scouts, Tim joined Troop 663 of Scripps Ranch. After a few years of rising in the ranks to Star, Tim decided to become a part of a new troop, Troop 301. In Troop 301, Tim had the opportunity to become one of the chief leaders at a younger than usual age, which he took on with full enthusiasm. Tim started off as an Instructor of First Aid, and eventually became the Assistant Senior Patrol Leader for the Troop’s first Summer. As ASPL, Tim took on the responsibility of being Senior Patrol Leader of Troop 301’s 40+ scouts at Lost Valley and Emerald Bay, two week-long Summer camps. After his Summer term as ASPL, Tim was elected as SPL. Other notable leadership roles include Venture Patrol Leader and Jr. Assistant Scoutmaster.
Tim’s fondest memories of scouting are camping trips to Agua Caliente, Yosemite, and Catalina Island. Tim attributes all of his current accomplishments and future plans to the skills, discipline, and honor that he learned as a Scout and hopes to inspire more boys to achieve Eagle Scout in the future.

Eagle Project:
Tim lead a group of Troop 301 scouts in the building of helmet racks, and dugout covers for the baseball field he used to play at as a kid. Tim designed the helmet racks, gathered the materials needed, and supervised the creation and installation. He is very grateful that Scripps Ranch Little League voted to fund his project, in the hopes of renovating and updating their community baseball fields, which he was glad to do.

Spencer Gibson
Spencer joined Pack 613 as a Tiger Cub while attending Jerebek Elementary. He learned a lot and had a lot of fun under the leadership of Den 5 leader Mr. Thomas Ryan and Cubmaster Mr.Andy Wisniewski. He was awarded the Arrow of Light in 2005. That same year, he enrolled with Troop 663 and remained there until he achieved the rank of Star Scout. After about 2 years, he transferred into Troop 301 under the leadership of Scoutmaster Dr. Bryon Solberg. I joined the Leadership Patrol and became a First Aid Instructor for the troop. He has many fond memories of the campouts and weekly meetings and learned many leadership skills.

Eagle Project:
In Poway Community Park, the dugouts on one of the baseball fields had weathered and torn tarps that were held up by PVC pipes. For my Eagle project, we removed the old tarps and supports and replaced them with brand new covers and metal support pipes. The covers alone were over $500 each, so I had to do a lot of fundraising to earn enough money to pay for them and the metal supports. If not for the help I received from my fellow scouts, we would not have been able to finish the project as quickly as we did.
